🗂️ Genre

A category of music defined by style or tradition.

Genre

A genre is a category of music defined by shared stylistic features, cultural context, or historical tradition. Listeners recognize a piece as jazz, classical, hip hop, or country through a combination of instrumentation, rhythm, harmony, vocal style, and performance practice.

Genres help audiences find music they are likely to enjoy and help musicians locate collaborators and markets. Boundaries are rarely rigid. Many works cross genres or create new hybrid styles. Over time genres evolve, split, or merge as musicians innovate and audiences’ tastes shift.

Music historians and critics use genre labels as convenient shorthand, yet they also caution against forcing complex works into overly narrow boxes. For performers and composers the concept of genre can be both a useful framework and a limitation to be challenged.

Understanding genre conventions is often the first step toward mastering or deliberately breaking them.
