An area of land used for growing crops or raising animals.
🏡
A farm is an area of land and its associated structures devoted primarily to agricultural production, including growing crops, raising livestock, and producing dairy, eggs, fibre, or fuel. Farms vary enormously in size and type, from small subsistence plots of less than a hectare to industrial operations covering thousands of hectares. They may specialise in a single commodity or diversify across crops, animals, and value-added products. Farm structures include barns, silos, greenhouses, fences, irrigation systems, and farmhouses. Ownership models include family farms, cooperatives, corporate farms, and tenant arrangements. Farms are shaped by climate, soil, topography, market access, and policy. Globally, there are roughly 570 million farms, and smallholdings under two hectares account for about 84 percent of them, producing a significant share of food in developing countries. Farms are central to rural economies and are increasingly influenced by sustainability standards, technology adoption, and direct-to-consumer marketing.
