Media buyers spend other people's money. They negotiate rates, choose placements, and make sure ads actually run where and when they were promised. The job is part analyst, part negotiator, and part firefighter when a campaign underdelivers.
The role changed dramatically with programmatic advertising. Buyers used to spend days on the phone with sales reps. Now much of the work happens in software dashboards, adjusting bids and shifting budgets in real time. Relationships still matter, especially for premium placements and sponsorships.
Daily responsibilities
- Negotiating rates and added value
- Placing insertion orders with publishers
- Monitoring delivery and pacing
- Reallocating budget toward what performs
Good buyers know the market rates cold. They can tell when a quote is inflated and when a deal is genuinely good. That instinct saves clients real money.
