A group of teams plays a scheduled series of matches against one another over several months, accumulating points toward a final ranking. That structure is a league. It rewards consistency across a season rather than single-elimination fortune.
Leagues may be open or closed, national or regional, professional or amateur. Points systems typically award more for wins than draws, with tiebreakers such as goal difference or head-to-head records. Promotion and relegation connect different levels in some systems, creating stakes at both ends of the table.
The league calendar shapes training periods, transfer windows, and fan engagement. Winning the league is often considered the primary measure of a season’s success. Rivalries develop through repeated meetings and add narrative weight to individual matches.
A league table at the end of the season tells a longer story than any single final.
