Antithesis

Some ideas gain force by standing against their opposites. Antithesis is the juxtaposition of contrasting words, phrases, or ideas in parallel structure. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” sets two extremes side by side so that each sharpens the other. The device appears in political rhetoric, literature, and everyday argument whenever a speaker wants to highlight a sharp division.

Effective antithesis relies on balance. The contrasting elements should be similar in grammatical form so that the opposition is clear and rhythmic. The result is often memorable because the mind registers both the similarity of structure and the difference of meaning at once. Writers use it to define a position by what it is not, or to dramatize a conflict within a single sentence.

Not every contrast qualifies. Casual opposition without parallel form is simply contrast. Antithesis requires the deliberate mirroring that makes the clash elegant as well as emphatic. When successful, it leaves the audience with a clean, pointed distinction that is hard to forget.
