📋 Survey

A method of collecting data from a sample of people.

Survey

Asking a structured set of questions to a sample of people is one of the most common ways to gather information. A survey is that instrument. Questions may be closed-ended for easy quantification or open-ended for richer detail. Surveys can be administered in person, by telephone, by mail, or online.

Design quality determines the usefulness of the results. Clear wording, logical order, and appropriate response options reduce measurement error. Sampling method determines how far the findings can be generalized. Response rates and non-response bias must be considered when interpreting results.

Surveys are used in market research, employee feedback, public-opinion measurement, and academic study. They are efficient for reaching many people and for tracking changes over time. Their limitations include the gap between what people say and what they do, and the difficulty of capturing complex or unconscious motivations. Used with awareness of those limits, surveys remain a practical and powerful research tool.
