🗣️ Chant

A rhythmic repeated phrase used in religious practice.

Chant

Monks file into a dim chapel and begin a slow, unison melody that rises and falls without instrumental accompaniment. That form of sung prayer is chant. The repeated melodic phrases carry sacred words and help focus the mind.

Gregorian chant in the Western church, Byzantine chant in the East, Vedic chant in Hinduism, and Qur’anic recitation in Islam all illustrate the practice. Chant can be simple and repetitive or highly elaborate. The steady rhythm and limited melodic range make extended performance possible and encourage a meditative state.

Modern worship sometimes recovers chant for its calming and unifying effect. Recordings have brought ancient repertoires to new audiences. Whether performed by trained choirs or entire congregations, chant links breath, voice, and intention in a single act of devotion.

The sound itself becomes a vehicle for the sacred text.
