🙇 Veneration

Deep respect or reverence, especially for saints.

Veneration

Veneration is deep respect expressed in outward form. In Christian usage it is the honor given to saints, to their relics, and to sacred images—distinct from the worship that belongs to God alone.

The distinction was formalized during the iconoclastic controversies of the eighth and ninth centuries. The Second Council of Nicaea insisted that the honor paid to an image passes to the prototype; the image itself is not worshipped. Saints are venerated because the grace of God is visible in their lives; their intercession is sought because they are alive in Christ. Relics—bones, clothing, or objects associated with holy persons—are treated with similar reverence as tangible links to the communion of saints.

Protestant Reformers largely rejected the practice, fearing idolatry and the displacement of Christ. Catholic and Orthodox traditions retained and defended it as an organic expression of the church’s memory and hope. Popular devotion has sometimes blurred the theological lines; official teaching continues to draw them carefully.

Outside Christianity, similar gestures appear in the respect paid to ancestors, teachers, or sacred places. Veneration is the body language of reverence when words alone feel insufficient.
