Some capabilities define what a company is uniquely good at. A core competency is a defining strength that is difficult for competitors to imitate and that contributes to customer value across multiple products or markets. It is not a single product but an underlying skill, knowledge base, or system of activities.
Identifying core competencies helps firms decide where to focus investment and which activities to outsource. Competencies that are merely temporary advantages or that are easily copied do not qualify. True core competencies are built over years through collective learning and are embedded in the organization’s people and processes.
When a company expands into new areas, the best opportunities are often those that leverage existing core competencies. When it neglects them, performance suffers. The concept encourages managers to look beneath the surface of current products to the deeper capabilities that make sustained success possible.
