🗽 Freedom of the Press

The right to report news without government interference.

Freedom of the Press

Independent reporting cannot survive if the state can dictate what is published. Freedom of the press is the right of news organizations and journalists to gather and disseminate information and opinion without prior government control or retaliation for lawful content.

Constitutional and international protections embody the principle, though the practical scope varies widely. It covers protection against prior restraint, against licensing schemes that enable political control, and against punishment for publishing truthful information of public concern. It does not immunize journalists from ordinary laws on defamation, privacy, or national security when those laws are applied fairly.

Threats include censorship, violence, surveillance, and economic pressure. Societies that maintain robust press freedom tend to show higher levels of government accountability and public information. The right is exercised daily in ordinary reporting as well as in high-stakes investigations.

Freedom of the press is essential for democracy. Without it citizens can't hold their government accountable.
