Two wheels, an engine, and handlebars. The motorcycle has been a symbol of freedom, danger, and cheap transport since Gottlieb Daimler bolted an engine to a wooden frame in 1885. It is the most efficient motorized way to move one person, and the most exposed.
Motorcycles range from 50cc scooters to 1,800cc touring bikes. The rider balances the machine at rest and leans it through corners. Countersteering, pushing the bar in the opposite direction of the turn, is how a motorcycle actually changes direction at speed. Riders learn this without thinking about it.
Major motorcycle types
- Cruiser: low seat, forward foot pegs, relaxed posture.
- Sportbike: aggressive stance, high power, track-derived.
- Touring: large fairings, luggage, long-distance comfort.
- Dual-sport: street legal but capable on dirt roads.
- Standard: upright, versatile, no strong specialization.
Safety is a constant concern. Motorcyclists are roughly 28 times more likely to die in a crash per mile traveled than car occupants, according to US data. Helmets, antilock brakes, and rider training reduce the risk, but the exposure remains. Lane filtering, common in Europe and legal in a growing number of US states, keeps riders out of the rear-end collision zone at traffic lights.
