🏠 Facade

The exterior face or front of a building.

Facade

The facade is the exterior face of a building. It is what the public sees, what the street responds to, what the building uses to present itself to the world. A facade can be plain or ornate, transparent or opaque, welcoming or defensive. It sets expectations for what is inside.

Facades do more than look good. They control light, heat, and air. They keep rain out and let daylight in. They must resist wind, seismic movement, and thermal expansion. A glass curtain wall, a brick veneer, a metal panel system — each is a facade strategy with different performance characteristics.

In historic preservation, the facade is often the most protected part of a building. Even when the interior is completely rebuilt, the facade may be legally required to stay. That is because facades define streetscapes and carry collective memory.

Designing a facade is a balancing act. The client wants an image. The engineer wants performance. The planner wants context. The budget wants simplicity. The best facades satisfy all four.
