👷 Architect

A professional who designs buildings and oversees their construction.

Architect

An architect does more than draw pretty buildings. The job is part designer, part engineer, part diplomat, part project manager. On any given day, an architect might sketch a stair detail, argue with a client about budget, coordinate with structural engineers, and review a contractor's submittals. The pencil is only one tool in a much larger kit.

Training takes years. In most places, becoming a licensed architect requires a professional degree, a lengthy internship, and a series of exams that test everything from structural principles to fire safety to professional ethics. The license matters because architects stamp drawings that affect public safety. Get the egress wrong, and people can die.

The work itself varies wildly. Some architects spend their careers on single-family houses. Others work on hospitals, stadiums, or airports. Some never touch a building at all, focusing instead on research, teaching, or writing. The common thread is a responsibility for how the built environment performs — functionally, aesthetically, and legally.
