Customer Lifetime Value

Customer lifetime value is the total revenue a business can reasonably expect from a single customer account over the entire relationship. It is a forward-looking estimate, not a historical fact. It answers the question: how much is this customer worth to us over time?

CLV is calculated by multiplying average purchase value, purchase frequency, and customer lifespan. A coffee shop customer who spends $5 a day, five days a week, for five years is worth thousands of dollars. That changes how much the shop can afford to spend on acquisition and retention.

Why CLV matters:

A high CLV means a customer is loyal, spends often, and stays for years. A low CLV means the relationship is short or low-value. Companies that focus only on the first sale miss the bigger picture. The most profitable businesses are the ones that keep customers coming back and increase what they spend over time.
