The customer journey is the complete sum of experiences a customer goes through when interacting with a company. It starts before the first purchase, continues through the buying process, and extends into post-purchase support and advocacy. It is not a single transaction. It is a relationship over time.
Marketers often map the journey in stages: awareness, consideration, purchase, retention, and advocacy. At each stage, the customer has different questions, different concerns, and different channels they prefer. A person who has never heard of your brand needs something different from someone who is ready to buy.
Stages of the customer journey:
- Awareness: becoming familiar with the brand.
- Consideration: evaluating options.
- Purchase: making the buying decision.
- Retention: staying a customer.
- Advocacy: recommending the brand to others.
The journey is rarely linear. Customers loop back, skip stages, and enter at different points. A good journey map identifies pain points and moments of truth where the experience can be improved. The goal is not to force customers through a funnel. It is to make every interaction as smooth and useful as possible.
