A real estate broker holds a higher license than a sales agent and can operate independently or supervise other agents. Brokers arrange transactions, provide market expertise, and collect commissions when deals close.
Many brokers run their own firms and hire agents who work under their license. Others function as independent practitioners. Brokers must complete additional education and experience requirements beyond the agent level. They carry responsibility for the accuracy of listings, proper handling of trust funds, and compliance with licensing laws.
In some transactions the broker represents only one side; in others dual or designated agency is permitted. Commission splits between broker and agent are set by agreement. Clients often choose a broker for deeper experience or specialized knowledge of a neighborhood or property type.
The broker’s license hangs on the wall, but reputation is built one successful closing at a time.
