🗽 Declaration of Independence

The 1776 document declaring American colonies free from Britain.

Declaration of Independence

On 4 July 1776 the Continental Congress adopted a text that severed political ties with Britain. The Declaration of Independence asserted that the thirteen American colonies were free and independent states, grounding the claim in a philosophy of natural rights and a list of grievances against the king.

Thomas Jefferson drafted the main text; congressional editing sharpened some passages and muted others. The document was printed, circulated, and read aloud to troops and town gatherings. Its second paragraph, on equality and unalienable rights, later became a touchstone for movements far beyond the original context.

The Declaration did not itself win the war, yet it clarified the rebels’ war aims and invited foreign support. Historians study its intellectual sources, its silences regarding slavery, and its global afterlife as a model for other independence proclamations. The signed parchment remains an iconic artifact of the American founding.
