💬 Qualitative Research

Research that focuses on obtaining data through open-ended communication.

Qualitative Research

Some questions cannot be answered with numbers alone. Qualitative research explores meanings, motivations, and experiences through open-ended methods such as in-depth interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic observation. The goal is depth of understanding rather than statistical generalizability.

Sample sizes are small by design. Analysis involves identifying themes, patterns, and nuances in the words and behaviors of participants. The researcher’s skill in probing, listening, and interpreting is central. Findings are typically presented as rich descriptions, quotes, and conceptual frameworks rather than as percentages.

Qualitative research is especially valuable in the early stages of product or strategy development, when the important questions are still being discovered. It can also explain the “why” behind quantitative patterns. Used alone it risks over-generalization from limited cases; used in combination with quantitative methods it supplies the insight that makes the numbers meaningful.
