Price

A tag on a shirt reads forty dollars. That figure is the price. It is the amount of money the retailer asks in exchange for the product.

Price communicates value, covers costs, and positions the item against alternatives. Setting it requires knowledge of costs, competitor pricing, and what customers are willing to pay. Too high and sales stall; too low and margin disappears or the product seems inferior.

Retailers adjust prices through promotions, markdowns, and dynamic algorithms. Transparency has increased with online comparison, putting pressure on inconsistencies. Clear, fair pricing builds trust; unexpected fees or confusing structures erode it. Price remains the most visible and most frequently compared element of the retail offer.

Every other merchandising decision eventually meets the test of the price tag.
