A score is the written representation of a musical composition that shows all the parts together. In an orchestral score each instrument or section has its own staff, aligned vertically so that simultaneous sounds can be seen at a glance.
Conductors study and perform from the full score. Players usually read from individual parts that contain only their own line. Scores range from simple piano pieces on two staves to massive orchestral or operatic scores that require large page sizes and careful layout.
Reading a score allows a musician to understand the complete texture, the interplay of lines, and the composer’s overall design. Modern software has made the preparation and distribution of scores far more efficient, yet the fundamental purpose remains unchanged: to fix the music in a form that others can realize in sound.
A well-prepared score is both a practical tool and a detailed record of the composer’s intentions.
