📦 Freight Forwarder

A company that arranges the transportation of goods.

Freight Forwarder

Many shippers lack the scale or expertise to arrange international moves alone. A freight forwarder is a company that organizes the transportation of goods on behalf of shippers, selecting carriers, preparing documents, and coordinating the journey from origin to destination.

Forwarders may consolidate small shipments, book ocean or air space, arrange inland haulage, and manage customs brokerage through partners. They issue house bills of lading or air waybills to their customers while holding master documents from the actual carriers. Their margin comes from the difference between bought and sold rates plus service fees.

A good forwarder reduces complexity for the shipper and provides a single point of contact when problems arise. Digital platforms have increased price transparency, yet relationship knowledge and exception handling still differentiate strong forwarders from pure marketplaces.
