⚖️ Carbon Neutral

Achieving net-zero carbon emissions by balancing output and removal.

Carbon Neutral

Carbon neutral means balancing the carbon you emit with the carbon you remove. A company that releases 10,000 tons of CO2 and removes or offsets 10,000 tons can claim neutrality. The goal is net zero, not zero. Emissions still happen. They are just canceled out.

Companies pursue neutrality in different ways. Some cut emissions directly by switching to renewable power and efficient equipment. Others buy carbon offsets, which fund projects that reduce or remove emissions elsewhere. The quality of offsets varies. A well-verified forest project or methane capture system delivers real reductions. A poorly documented one may not.

Critics call carbon neutrality a accounting trick. A company can claim neutrality while continuing to emit and paying for offsets that would have happened anyway. Standards are tightening. The Science Based Targets initiative requires companies to cut emissions first and use offsets only for what remains. The concept works when the reductions are real and verified.
