🎭 Monologue

A long speech by one actor in a play or movie.

Monologue

One character speaks at length while others listen or while the audience overhears. A monologue is that extended speech. In drama it can reveal inner thoughts, advance the plot, or display rhetorical skill. Unlike a soliloquy, a monologue is usually addressed to other characters on stage, though the distinction is not always rigid.

Effective monologues balance information with character. The speech must sound like something this particular person would say under these particular circumstances. Long stretches of pure exposition can feel artificial; the best monologues arise from conflict, desire, or the need to persuade. In film and television the camera can move in close, turning the monologue into an intimate moment of revelation.

Actors prize well-written monologues as opportunities to demonstrate range and depth. Writers use them to slow the pace, deepen psychological insight, or deliver a thematic statement with force. Whether formal or conversational, the monologue places a single voice at the center of attention and asks the audience to follow its turns of thought and feeling.
