User experience is the overall experience a person has when interacting with a product. It includes ease of use, efficiency, satisfaction, and emotion. A good UX feels effortless. A bad UX feels frustrating. UX designers study how people use products and design to reduce friction.
UX is not the same as UI. UI is the visual interface: buttons, colors, typography. UX is the whole journey: finding the product, learning it, using it, and getting support. A beautiful interface with confusing navigation is bad UX. A plain interface that works perfectly is good UX.
Elements of UX
- Usability: can people accomplish their goals?
- Accessibility: can everyone use it?
- Efficiency: how fast can tasks be done?
- Emotion: how does it feel to use?
- Trust: does it feel reliable and safe?
UX matters for business. Good UX increases conversion, retention, and satisfaction. Bad UX drives users away. Companies invest in user research, prototyping, and testing. The best UX is invisible. Users do not notice it. They just get things done.
