🗂️ Contingency Planning

Preparing alternative plans for potential disruptions.

Contingency Planning

Disruptions arrive without warning. Contingency planning is the preparation of alternative courses of action so that logistics operations can continue when primary plans fail.

Planners identify critical nodes, single points of failure, and realistic disruption scenarios—port strikes, severe weather, supplier insolvency, or cyber incidents. For each scenario they define trigger points, backup suppliers, alternate routes, and communication protocols. Regular drills test whether the plans work under pressure.

Effective contingency plans balance cost against risk. Holding extra inventory or dual-sourcing adds expense, yet the cost of an unplanned stoppage is usually higher. Organizations that treat contingency planning as a living process rather than a static document recover faster when trouble hits.
