🦠 Soil organism

Any living creature in the soil contributing to its health.

Soil organism

A single teaspoon of healthy soil can contain billions of bacteria. Add fungi, protozoa, nematodes, earthworms, and insects, and you have a living community that drives nutrient cycling, disease suppression, and soil structure. Most of it is invisible without a microscope.

Earthworms are the famous ones, dragging organic matter down and leaving channels that improve water movement. Fungi form networks that connect plants and transport nutrients. Bacteria break down organic matter and fix nitrogen. Each group has its own role, and all of them depend on soil conditions that farmers can either support or destroy.

Key soil organisms

Tillage, overgrazing, and heavy chemical use can crash these populations. Reducing disturbance and adding organic matter lets them recover, often improving yields without extra inputs.
