🗓️ Era

A long and distinct period of history with a particular character.

Era

Long stretches of time sometimes share a recognizable character. An era is an extended historical period distinguished by particular political, cultural, or economic features that set it apart from what came before and after.

Historians speak of the Victorian era, the Cold War era, or the era of European overseas empires. The boundaries are rarely sharp; they are interpretive choices that highlight continuity within the span and contrast with neighboring periods. Eras may be defined by the reign of a ruler, a dominant technology, or a prevailing ideology.

Using eras helps organize teaching and public discussion, yet it can also flatten internal diversity and contestation. Careful history tests whether the supposed character of an era holds across regions and social groups. The concept remains a flexible tool rather than a rigid container.
