📅 Sabbath

A day of rest and worship observed weekly.

Sabbath

One day each week is set apart from ordinary labor for rest and worship. That day is the Sabbath. The practice originates in the biblical creation story and the Exodus commandment.

Jewish Sabbath begins at sundown Friday and continues until nightfall Saturday. It includes synagogue worship, family meals, and abstention from a wide range of creative work. Christian traditions shifted the primary day of worship to Sunday in honor of the resurrection, while retaining the principle of rhythmic rest. Other faiths maintain analogous weekly or periodic pauses.

Sabbath resists the demand for constant productivity. It creates space for relationships, reflection, and delight in the created world. Modern economic pressures erode the practice, yet many continue to protect it as a weekly sanctuary. The Sabbath remains a concrete enactment of trust that the world does not depend on perpetual human effort.

Once a week, time itself is declared holy.
