⚖️ Centrism

A political position avoiding extreme views.

Centrism

Some political actors deliberately avoid the poles of the spectrum. Centrism is the stance that seeks pragmatic solutions, compromises, and policies that draw from both left and right rather than adhering to a single ideological camp.

Centrist parties and politicians often emphasize evidence, incremental reform, and the median voter. They may support regulated markets, targeted social programs, and multilateral foreign policy. Critics from both sides accuse centrists of lacking principle or of merely splitting differences. Defenders reply that governing pluralistic societies requires coalition-building and moderation.

Electoral systems that reward broad appeal can favor centrist strategies. Polarized environments, by contrast, squeeze the center and reward clearer ideological signals. Centrism is therefore both a substantive orientation and a tactical response to the structure of competition.

In closely divided legislatures, centrist votes frequently decide outcomes.
