🎧 Hip Hop

A genre featuring rhythmic vocals and beats.

Hip Hop

Hip hop emerged in the Bronx in the 1970s as a cultural movement that included DJing, MCing, breakdancing, and graffiti. Musically it centers on rhythmic spoken or chanted vocals delivered over beats often created from sampled recordings or electronic drum machines.

Early pioneers such as DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, and Afrika Bambaataa established the foundation. Later artists expanded the lyrical content, production techniques, and geographic reach. The genre has continually absorbed new influences while retaining its emphasis on rhythm, wordplay, and social commentary.

Production techniques include sampling, looping, scratching, and digital beat-making. Live performance may feature a DJ, a live band, or backing tracks. Hip hop’s influence now extends across popular music worldwide, yet its core remains rooted in the creative expression of its original communities.

Listening closely reveals layers of rhythm, reference, and verbal invention.
