🔓 Hood

The hinged cover over the engine compartment of a vehicle.

Hood

The hood, called the bonnet in Britain, is the hinged panel that covers the engine bay. It protects the engine from rain, debris, and casual tampering, and it gives designers a large surface to shape. On most cars it lifts from the front and props open, held by struts or a manual rod.

Materials have shifted over the decades. Steel gave way to aluminum on many performance and luxury models, and some hoods use sheet molding compound or carbon fiber. Pedestrian safety rules in Europe pushed makers to leave a gap between the hood and engine so a struck pedestrian's head has room to deform the panel rather than hit hard metal.

Why the hood matters

Pop the hood and you find the parts that keep the car running. That simple act remains the first step in most roadside checks.
