🐐 Silvopasture

The practice of combining trees, forage, and grazing animals.

Silvopasture

Walk into a well-managed silvopasture and you see three things at once: trees, grass, and animals. The system deliberately combines them on the same land, letting each component benefit the others. Cattle graze beneath scattered oaks or pines, and the trees provide shade that reduces heat stress on livestock.

The practice has roots in Mediterranean and tropical farming, but interest has grown in temperate regions as growers look for ways to diversify income and improve soil. Trees drop leaves that build organic matter. Animals cycle nutrients through manure. Forage grows in the partial shade of a canopy that still lets enough light through.

Common arrangements

Management is demanding. Trees must be protected from browsing when young, and grazing pressure has to be timed so forage can recover. Get it wrong and the system fails one component at a time.
