🌲 Man vs. Nature

A conflict between a character and nature.

Man vs. Nature

Man vs. nature is a type of external conflict in which a character struggles against natural forces—weather, wilderness, animals, or disease. The nonhuman world becomes the antagonist.

Stories of survival at sea, of crossing deserts, of enduring storms or plagues belong to this type. The conflict tests endurance, ingenuity, and the limits of human control. Nature is typically indifferent rather than malicious, which can make the struggle feel both epic and existential. Resolution may be survival, death, or a hard-won accommodation with natural limits.

Man vs. nature often carries thematic weight about humanity’s place in the larger order. It can celebrate resilience or expose hubris. In an era of environmental crisis the conflict has taken on new urgency, sometimes shading into man vs. the consequences of human action on nature. The core remains a protagonist measured against forces that do not negotiate.

When the chief obstacle is the physical world itself, the conflict is man versus nature.
