Pedagogy is the theory and practice of teaching. It covers how teachers plan lessons, manage classrooms, and decide what methods to use. It is not just technique. It includes beliefs about how people learn, what knowledge matters, and what role a teacher should play.
Different traditions disagree. Teacher-centered pedagogy puts the instructor at the front, delivering content. Student-centered pedagogy shifts focus to inquiry, discussion, and discovery. Most teachers blend both, adjusting to the subject, the age group, and the day.
The word comes from Greek, where a pedagogue was a slave who led a child to school. The meaning has evolved. Today, pedagogy is studied in teacher training programs and debated in policy circles. A teacher with strong subject knowledge but weak pedagogy will struggle to reach students. Both matter.
