🔬 Resolution

The amount of detail an image holds, measured in pixels.

Resolution

Stories move toward an ending that settles the central conflict. Resolution is that concluding phase of the plot. Loose ends are tied, questions are answered, and the characters reach a new state of equilibrium—or at least a stopping point that feels earned. In traditional dramatic structure the resolution follows the climax and falling action.

Not every resolution is tidy or happy. Some stories end in ambiguity, tragedy, or open questions. What matters is that the narrative energy that drove the middle of the work has been addressed. Readers may feel satisfaction, surprise, or deliberate unease, depending on the author’s design.

In longer works the resolution can occupy a substantial final section; in short stories it may be only a paragraph. Either way, it is the point at which the reader can look back and see the shape of the whole. A weak resolution leaves the impression that the story has simply stopped; a strong one makes the preceding events feel purposeful and complete.

Category says ecology but this definition is clearly about digital images. Seems like a wrong categorization.
  2. Beth C.
Resolution also means a firm decision or the act of solving a problem. Busy word with very different meanings.

Higher resolution doesn't always mean better quality. Sensor size and lens matter just as much for image quality.
