The employment relationship is both economic and human. Labor relations is the field concerned with the interactions between management and employees, particularly where workers are organized in unions.
It covers collective bargaining, contract administration, grievance handling, dispute resolution, and day-to-day workplace climate. Legal frameworks set rights and obligations for both sides. Constructive labor relations reduce conflict costs and support productivity; adversarial relations consume time and goodwill.
Even in non-union settings the quality of labor relations shapes engagement and trust. Managers who understand employee perspectives and communicate early about changes prevent many disputes from hardening. Mutual respect does not eliminate hard bargaining, but it keeps channels open.
