💡 Brainstorming

A group technique for generating creative ideas.

Brainstorming

Brainstorming generates creative ideas in a group. The rules are simple. Defer judgment. Encourage wild ideas. Build on others. Go for quantity. The goal is to produce many options, not to find the right answer immediately. Criticism kills the flow. A group that evaluates every idea as it appears will produce few ideas and take a long time doing it. Separating generation from evaluation is the core principle.

Traditional brainstorming has critics. Research shows that groups often produce fewer ideas than the same number of people working alone. Social loafing, production blocking, and evaluation apprehension all reduce output. Nominal group technique addresses this by having people write ideas independently before sharing. Brainwriting passes cards around so everyone contributes without waiting for a turn. These variations often outperform the classic free-for-all. The facilitation matters too. A skilled facilitator keeps the session on track, draws out quiet participants, and prevents dominant voices from taking over. Time limits force focus. Prompts and constraints spark creativity rather than limiting it. A blank page is intimidating. A specific question is generative. Brainstorming is not magic. It is a structured process. Run it well and it produces results. Run it poorly and it wastes everyone's time.

Brainstorming rules

Brainstorming is a tool. It works when the process is respected and the facilitation is skilled.

Brainstorming works best when you separate idea generation from idea evaluation. Criticize later, not during.

The article is clear. A group technique for generating creative ideas. Simple but important in design.
