Brainstorming menghasilkan ide-ide kreatif dalam sebuah kelompok. Aturannya sederhana. Tunda penilaian. Dorong ide-ide liar. Kembangkan ide-ide lain. Utamakan kuantitas.
Traditional brainstorming has critics. Research shows that groups often produce fewer ideas than the same number of people working alone. Social loafing, production blocking, and evaluation apprehension all reduce output. Nominal group technique addresses this by having people write ideas independently before sharing. Brainwriting passes cards around so everyone contributes without waiting for a turn. These variations often outperform the classic free-for-all. The facilitation matters too. A skilled facilitator keeps the session on track, draws out quiet participants, and prevents dominant voices from taking over. Time limits force focus. Prompts and constraints spark creativity rather than limiting it. A blank page is intimidating. A specific question is generative. Brainstorming is not magic. It is a structured process. Run it well and it produces results. Run it poorly and it wastes everyone's time.
Brainstorming rules
- Defer judgment — no criticism during idea generation
- Encourage wild ideas — they spark practical ones
- Build on others — combine and improve
- Go for quantity — more ideas increase the chance of good ones
- Stay focused — a clear prompt keeps the session productive
Brainstorming is a tool. It works when the process is respected and the facilitation is skilled.
