🪵 Raw Material

Unprocessed material used as the starting point for crafting.

Raw Material

A raw material is the unprocessed starting point for a craft. It is the log before it becomes a bowl, the fleece before it becomes yarn, the clay before it becomes a mug. Raw materials come from nature, agriculture, or mining. They need work before they are useful: drying, cutting, cleaning, spinning, or refining.

Craft workers care about raw material quality because it sets the ceiling on the finished piece. Green wood moves and cracks as it dries. Dirty fleece holds grit that dulls carding tools. Clay with too much sand tears on the wheel. Experienced makers learn to read raw materials before they buy or harvest. They check moisture, grain direction, fiber staple length, and impurities.

Common craft raw materials

Storage matters. Raw materials absorb moisture, attract pests, or oxidize. A dry, dark, pest-free space protects the investment. Buy small amounts fresh rather than hoarding a lifetime supply that goes bad in the corner.
