The refractory period is the pause after orgasm when another climax is unlikely or impossible. In many people with penises it comes with a soft penis and a sudden drop in interest. Minutes or hours can pass. Age tends to lengthen it. A second round the same night is common in youth and less so later, with plenty of exceptions.
People with vulvas often have a shorter pause or none that looks like the same wall. Too-sensitive tissue can still ask for a break even when another orgasm is possible.
Partners who take the pause as rejection add hurt to a biological intermission. A glass of water and a shift to non-goal touch fill the gap better than a pep talk aimed at the penis.
If there is never a pause and sex is compulsive, that is a different problem with a different name.
