✍️ Writing System

A method of representing language visually with symbols.

Writing System

Languages can be written in radically different ways. A writing system is a conventional method for visually or tactilely representing linguistic units—segments, syllables, or morphemes—through a repertoire of symbols and rules for their combination.

Alphabets, abjads, abugidas, syllabaries, and logographic systems illustrate major types. Orthographic conventions, direction of the script, and punctuation form part of the broader writing system. Borrowing a script from another language often requires adaptation to new sound patterns.

Designing or reforming a writing system affects literacy, technology, and identity. Unicode and fonts make multilingual digital writing possible at scale. Typologists and historians classify systems by the linguistic level they primarily encode and by their cultural lineages.
