Software is programs and instructions that tell a computer what to do. It is not physical. You cannot touch it. But it controls everything the hardware does. Without software, a computer is a pile of silicon and metal. The operating system, applications, drivers, and firmware are all software.
Software comes in many forms. System software manages hardware. Application software helps users do tasks. Programming software helps developers write code. Malware is software designed to harm. Firmware is software embedded in hardware. Each type has a different role.
Types of software
- System: operating systems, drivers, utilities
- Application: word processors, browsers, games
- Programming: compilers, editors, debuggers
- Middleware: connects applications and services
- Firmware: embedded in devices
Software is written in programming languages, then compiled or interpreted. It is tested, debugged, and updated. Modern software is complex. A web browser has millions of lines of code. A car has over 100 million. Software runs the world. It also breaks. Updates fix bugs and add features. The cycle never ends.
