Every four years athletes from around the world gather in one host city to compete across a wide program of sports. That event is the Olympic Games. It is the largest and most symbolic multi-sport competition on the calendar.
The modern Olympics were revived in 1896 and now include Summer and Winter editions. Hundreds of events span athletics, aquatics, combat sports, team games, and many others. National Olympic committees send teams; the International Olympic Committee oversees the Games. Medals—gold, silver, and bronze—recognize the top three finishers in each event.
The Games carry cultural and political weight beyond pure sport. Host cities invest heavily in venues and infrastructure. Athletes often peak their entire careers toward a single Olympic cycle. Moments of excellence and sportsmanship become part of collective memory.
For many athletes, an Olympic medal remains the ultimate career achievement.
