🏛️ Legal System

The framework of rules and institutions that govern a society.

Legal System

Societies need structured ways to make and enforce rules. A legal system is the network of institutions, rules, and processes through which law is created, interpreted, and applied in a given community.

It includes legislatures, courts, executive agencies, police, and the legal profession, along with the constitution, statutes, regulations, and judicial decisions they produce. Comparative law distinguishes common-law, civil-law, religious, and hybrid systems, among others.

Effective legal systems provide predictable rules, accessible dispute resolution, and constraints on arbitrary power. Dysfunction appears as corruption, excessive delay, or selective enforcement. Reform efforts target procedure, access to counsel, and institutional independence to improve performance.
