🏗️ Launch Pad

The platform from which a rocket or spacecraft is launched.

Launch Pad

Rockets need somewhere to stand before they fly. The launch pad provides that platform along with the plumbing, power, and support structures needed to prepare a vehicle for liftoff. It also channels the exhaust away so the rocket does not destroy itself at ignition.

Flame trenches or deflectors route hot gases sideways. Water deluge systems suppress sound and cool the structure. Umbilical towers supply propellant and power until the final seconds, then swing away or retract.

Pad infrastructure

Pads take years to build and cost hundreds of millions. They also have to be refurbished between launches, especially after heavy-lift vehicles scar the concrete and steel with heat and vibration.
