🧬 Astrobiology

The study of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe.

Astrobiology

Astrobiology asks a big question: is there life elsewhere in the universe? It is not just about aliens. The field studies how life began on Earth, what conditions it needs, and where those conditions might exist beyond our planet. It combines biology, chemistry, geology, astronomy, and planetary science.

The search focuses on water, carbon, and energy. Liquid water is the most promising solvent for life as we know it. Carbon forms the complex molecules that life uses. Energy sources, from sunlight to chemical gradients, drive metabolism. Astrobiologists look for these ingredients on Mars, in the subsurface oceans of Europa and Enceladus, and in the atmospheres of exoplanets.

The field also studies extremophiles, organisms on Earth that survive in boiling vents, acidic lakes, and radioactive waste. These creatures expand the range of environments where life might exist. They also inform the design of instruments that search for biosignatures, the chemical traces that living things leave behind.

No definitive evidence of extraterrestrial life has been found. The search continues because the question is too important to ignore.
