🪄 Baton

A thin stick used by a conductor to direct musicians.

Baton

A thin stick held in the conductor’s right hand makes the beat visible to an entire orchestra or choir. That stick is the baton. Most are made of wood or lightweight composite with a cork or wooden handle that fits the hand.

The baton amplifies small wrist and arm motions so players at the back of the stage can follow the pulse and the expressive gestures. Some conductors prefer to work without a baton, using only the hands; others find the stick indispensable for clarity in large forces or complex rhythms.

Choosing a baton is personal. Length, balance, and flexibility affect how the conductor feels the music and how clearly the ensemble reads the beat. In performance the baton becomes an extension of the arm, shaping phrases as well as marking time.

Students of conducting practice basic patterns until the baton moves with economy and precision.
