Asked how many uses one can find for a brick, some people list three ordinary ones while others generate dozens of unexpected possibilities. Divergent thinking is the generation of multiple, varied solutions to an open-ended problem.
It is a core component of creativity. Fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration are the usual scoring dimensions. Divergent thinking flourishes when evaluation is temporarily suspended and when the thinker feels free to explore remote associations.
Educational practices that reward single correct answers can suppress divergent habits. Brainstorming, forced connections, and playful constraint can strengthen them. Divergent thinking alone does not guarantee useful creativity; convergent evaluation is still required to select and refine the best ideas. Together the two modes support innovation.

- Measured by fluency, flexibility, and originality
