Specialists talk among themselves in dense shorthand. Jargon is the specialized vocabulary shared by members of a profession, trade, or interest group, often opaque to outsiders.
Jargon raises efficiency among experts and marks group membership. It becomes a problem when used to exclude, obscure, or impress rather than to communicate. Technical fields inevitably develop jargon; responsible speakers translate it for wider audiences.
Lexicographers and plain-language advocates track jargon that migrates into general use. Some terms lose their specialized edge and become ordinary vocabulary. Workplace training sometimes includes jargon lists so newcomers can participate fully.
- Specialized vocabulary of a group or field
- Aids precision among experts
- Can hinder communication with outsiders
- May eventually enter general usage
