🅰️ Typeface

A set of characters sharing a common design style.

Typeface

A typeface is not a font. That distinction trips people up, but it matters. Helvetica is a typeface. Helvetica Bold 12-point is a font. The typeface is the design. The font is the delivery mechanism, the specific size and weight and style.

Typefaces come in families. A single family might include regular, italic, bold, condensed, and a dozen other variants. Each variant shares the same underlying design DNA but adapts it for different uses. A well-built family gives designers enough range to handle everything from headlines to footnotes without switching to a different typeface.

Categories of typeface

Choosing a typeface is one of the most consequential design decisions. It sets tone before a single word is read. A geometric sans-serif says modern and clean. A humanist serif says approachable and literate. A blackletter face says either medieval or heavy metal, depending on context. Designers often pair two typefaces, one for headings and one for body text, creating contrast without conflict.
